A family's no-buy experiment

September 18th, 2008 at 03:53 pm

I came across this interesting article at readers digest today. I found it especially humorous reading about them abandoning a full shopping cart at Target after realizing they don't need any of that junk. I've definitely had those feelings before.

Thanks for sharing this. It really does stop and make me think. I enjoyed reading how he fixed the shower with dishsoap and boiling water.

well, this reminds me of No Impact Man, the guy with the website who, with his family, decided to see if he could go a YEAR without spending.

I like to challenge myself in ways like this but how could you do it for a month? I mean, i could probably get by for a week without spending anything EXCEPT on gas for the car. I've got a 45-minute drive.

I had those "shopping cart moments" too, probably a few years ago, when you realize that maybe all that shopping is a salve for something else that's missing from your life. Like, do you really NEED this stuff? I think people really use shopping as a form of entertainment, or if they're bored with their lives, it distracts them from their real problems.

For me, i admit, saving $ has become a "game" and a personal challenge. I probably don't have to pinch pennies as much as I do, course, i'm not a millionnaire yet so until i am, I'm going to squeeze everything i can out of what $ i have...
