Cancelled TV today

June 26th, 2009 at 06:43 pm

And I feel so much better already! I've had an exhausting couple of months, and have gotten into the rotten habit of plopping onto the couch when I got home and numbing out in front of the tube for the evening, consequently feeling pretty worthless. I'll even admit to eating takeout for dinner off our coffee table, a new personal low.

There are really just a few shows we watch most of which we get online. We own the dish and the TiVo box, so local channels are still available and free, and we still have Netflix for movies, so I'm weaning myself off it slowly. But it had to be done, and the cost savings is a nice bonus.

Now I just hope that I don't substitute browsing time for my previous TV watching time. Better stock up on some books and get a home to-do list to chip away at.

Oh my, we eat in our living room sometimes and my husband thinks its awful. I wish I had the willpower to do away with our dish bill but I love to watch certain shows. But good for you!

Ms. Pearl, if you have a good handle on your TV viewing and really enjoy it, then I don't think it's so bad. Unfortunately I was using it as the addictive crutch that it can be, and it was starting to be detrimental to my life. I think next to my list is to sell our extra TV that we still have in the basement, from my DHs bachelor days. I'd really like to be a 1 tv household before we start a family Smile

If we buy a house, I would like to mount our TV on a wall at the eye-level of me standing. Than I would put a treadmill in front of it, so that I could only watch if while walking on a treadmill. I think than it would be very good for me, either way.

It would be like - you want to watch another episode? sure! walk at least 5 miles while doing it. Smile

Good for you! Shoot, we eat at the coffee table in front of the TV 99% of the time. (I resolve to fight that once we have kids, but truth is I enjoy it, so for now I'm indulging myself.) My partners are from families that had TV on constantly, while my family didn't even own (or want) a TV until I was in high school, and even then no antenna; it was only for renting movies. So my partners like to have a TV going constantly which they can pretty much ignore, while I find myself irresistably glued to it for hours and hours a day. The one time I suggested having certain days or weeks without TV they both reacted negatively--and why not? It doesn't impede their productivity like it does mine.

Sigh. The dilemma. Sorry I rambled so much. Congratulations to you, though!

Good for you! I "pulled the plug" earlier this year, but I still have cable internet so I get a handful of local channels. I am shocked at how much crap there still is to watch on those few channels! I was "addicted" to a cable news channel, but I realized I just had it on in the background for noise. What am I doing right now? Enjoying some music on Pandora. This is so much nicer than tv for me! I feel really bad because DH is currently missing his beloved Nascar races. I bought a Hava streamer and I have it all configured with a VCR and ready to take to my mom's house to "mooch" Nascar races. I'll have her pull the plug on her end if this becomes an issue.... Big Grin
